Description
USA, Seated Liberty silver Half Dollar, Louisiana issue, 1861, New Orleans, (die W-04; KM A68). In NGC holder graded Shipwreck Effect (C) UNC / SS Republic, lustrous. Struck by the State of Louisiana, after secession. When Louisiana seceded from the Union on 26th January 1861, it continued to strike Half Dollars at the New Orleans Mint. This continued until the state joined the Confederacy on March 21, 1861, placing control over the mint to the Confederate Treasury. Recovered from SS Republic, sunk in 1865 off the coast of Georgia.
