Description
Victoria (1837-1901), Penny, 1856, ornamental trident, young head left date below, legend surrounds VICTORIA DEI GRATIA, w.w. on truncation for William Wyon. Rev, Britannia helmeted seated right with shield and plain trident, emblems in exergue, reads BRITANNIAR REG FID DEF :, far colon (S.3948; BMC.1512: RR). Rich tone with some intermittent lustre, the portrait under closer inspection showing good clarity in the intricacies of the hair and ribbons; some contact marks and nicks, the fields generally clear. Rev, few marks and die breaks in the exergue area. The ornamental trident type is recorded as much rarer than the plain trident for this already rare year. About extremely fine, very rare.
