Description
Charles II (1660‑1685) , Pattern Broad of 20 shillings, 1662, laureate and draped bust left, reverse crowned shield of arms, (S.3337A, N.2780). Very fine for issue with a delightful reddish tone, underlying mint brilliance.
These 20 shilling Gold pieces were made in March to April of 1662, records show that Thomas Simon had been instructed to create the dies, after the initial Gold had been supplied, roughly 3,400 were struck. Mechanical failures shortly followed, other specialists have mentioned this may have led to the fracturing of the dies. Insofar as the designs and arrangement, these imposing Regal pieces mirror the earlier hammered coinage series. All dies were created from the same puncheons, with slight modifications. It has been argued that three of the eight dies display signs of cracks and fractures, in turn these cracks will present and appear on several of the coins, as part of the initial strike.
