Description
Edward III (1327-1377), Noble, Calais II/I mule, Fourth coinage Post treaty period, issued between 1369‑77, inner beaded borders both sides, legend reads EDWΛRD DI GRΛ REX ΛNGL FRΛNC DNS HIB Z AQVIT, single saltire stops, king standing facing in ship with upright sword and quartered shield, ships rigging three ropes to the left and one to the right, flag at stern. Rev, mintmark cross 3, legend reads, IHC ΛVTEM TRΛNSIENS PER MEDIV ILLORVM IBAT, double saltire stops, floriated cross with lombardic E and pellet in centre, lis terminals, lions and crowns in angles all within a tressure of eight arcs, fleurs in spandrels, 7.73g (S.1520; N.1280; Stewartby class II/I mule; Schneider I, 111; cf. Doubleday.300). Lustrous original gold tone with mint brilliance, executed with a partially rusty obverse die, however all the key details pronounced. Portrait, ship, sea and flag all outstanding, the slightest of doubling in the southern part of legend reflected also on reverse. Rev, pin‑point precision with some sporadic raised die flaws, the central panel especially pleasing and articulate. Much as struck, an outstanding and well balanced coin, rare muled.
Ex. Baldwin’s, with an Adelphi Terrace envelope and an old supporting ticket.
