Description
Edward the Confessor (1042-66) Penny, Pointed Helmet type (1053-1056) muled with a Hammer Cross type reverse (1059-1062), Bedford mint, moneyer Sigod, helmeted and draped bust right with sceptre, legend commences at top, +EΛDPARRD REX. Rev, pellet at centre of short voided cross terminating in crescent ends, legend reads +SIGOD ON BEDEFOR, 1.19g (S.1179/1182; N.825/828; Freeman 48; SCBI 30 [American collection], 615). An extremely rare mule with only a handful known for commerce for Bedford [the Argyll specimen being the SCBI 30 entry, Norweb [1264] and later the David Sellwood specimen amongst very few others], lightly toned with strong definition in the portrait and legends. Some hairline scratches on reverse, otherwise bold very fine and extremely rare.
