Description
Presented by the Marquis of Salisbury (to master Edward Francis Witts). Ten-line legend, rev. Marquis of Salisbury arms and motto, all within a floral collar and integrated suspension loop, 44mm. (not including loop), beautiful red leather and cream silk box, punched Rayne and Son, Bath. 19.94gm. Medal good Extremely Fine, case pristine.

Sold with a contemporary newspaper cutting citing that the pupils were examined at Rev. Mr. Hales of Lyde House on Saturday Dec. 13th. 1823 and who the three prize winners were. Master Witts’s father, the Rev. F E Witts, records in his diary (Diary of a Cotswold Parson) that the other two medals were gilt and Edward, the youngest in the class, received his for examination on the first book of Virgil’s Aenid.
