Description
Good style, Danelaw type A2, ELFR ÆDREX, diademed bust right. Rev, monogram of Londinia, 1.30gm (MacKay, BNJ 2019, Danelaw type A2, (same obv. die as p. 91, no. 12); S. 964; N. 463). Extremely Fine with areas of weakness as usually found, extremely rare.
Found 2021 near Bury St Edmunds, recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC number: 2021.0273.
This example belongs to a group of good style Viking imitations of the London issued Monogram coins of Alfred the Great. MacKay, in his Corpus of London Monogram Coins of Alfred the Great and the Danelaw (British Numismatic Journal 89, 2019), noted six examples of Danelaw A pence struck from six die combinations.
