Description
(86mm/201gm) by Sperandio of Mantua (1431-1504). Armoured bust left wearing mortarboard cap, legend reads DVFE VRBDCS MOTE AC DRCM RIGCPGEAC S RO ECCECN INVICTI. Rev, the Duke on horseback riding left pointing with baton, legend reads OPVS SPERANDEI (Hill 389; Pollard 108). Good Very Fine, pierced for suspension, very rare.

Federico da Montefeltro was one of the most successful mercenary captains of the Italian Renaissance. He was a renowned intellectual humanist and civil leader in Urbino, on top of his impeccable reputation for martial skill and honour. Purchased from Claude Burgan Numismatique at auction in July 1992 for 5,000 French Francs (equivalent to 760 Euros).
