Description
Sudan, Republic, brass Proof set (4), AH 1398 / 1978 AD, Organisation of African Unity Summit Meeting, Khartoum, including: brass 50 Pounds, brass 25 Pounds, brass 10 Pounds and brass 5 Pounds, edges grained and stamped with the Arabic numeral 6, no countermarks variety, 6.36g, 4.48g, 24.30g, 10g (KM PS7var.). Uncirculated Proofs in the original box of issue. All are off-metal strikes in brass. Extremely rare.
The mintage of this set is unknown as the only recorded mintage in Krause is for later sets. This is the only brass set that has appeared in auctions in the last 20 years and both times it has been catalogued incorrectly as a combination of silver and brass coins. However, the metal analysis that we have done and the weight discrepancy that it has with silver Proofs shows that they are all brass Proofs with gilding. In Krause, brass off-metal strikes are recorded for gold denominations and not for silver ones. Therefore, their exact mintage is unknown and presumably very low as all the copper and brass off-metal strikes are noted as less than 25 examples struck.
