Description
Crowned large C . R, DVM . SPIRO . SPERO (while I breath I hope), in large lettering. Rev, castle gateway with flag dividing P C, brandished arm and sword in right field, OBS to left, 4.69gm (S. 3148; N. 2646; H. Hird sale, lots 273-4, same dies). Richly cabinet toned, Good Very Fine, very rare, especially in this condition, with old ticket.

Ex. Spink Auction No. 22, 16th June 1982, lot 767, hammered for £370. This was purchased from Spink by a Mr Philip Harris from Castleford who subsequently gave the coin to the Pontefract Museum on a semi-permanent basis. He stated in a news article that “I feel that rare items such as this coin should not go out of the town.” Photocopies of the article, as well as correspondence from the museum, included in lot.
