Description
Philip and Mary (1554-1558), Shilling, dated 1554, busts face to face with English titles, crown above. Legend commences PHILIP ET MARIA DG REX ET REGINA ANGL. Rev, crowned quartered and garnished shield of arms with an offi cial piercing at centre, mark of value flanking either side of crown X – II, outer beaded border both sides, reads POSVIMVS DEVM ADIVTOREM NOSTRVM, 6.01g (S.2501; N.1968). Choice extremely fine and practically as struck. Attractive blue/olive/mauve toning. A stunning example.
Footnote
Superb double portrait of Philip and Mary – for some reason these coins are normally fairly weakly struck and usually one or other of the portraits is a bit weak. Both of these are strong and there is virtually no wear - all the main details are clearly visible, thus rare.
