Footnote
This coin has been consigned to Baldwin’s as a family heirloom. The consignor has stated that a wealthy British family had the coin in their possession since the early 17th century. The family made a name for itself in Briain and USA as precious metal traders. They were forced to leave England after siding with Charles I during the civil war, moving first to Louisiana and then North Carolina. The groat was gifted by the family to a museum in North Carolina in 1903. In 1937, the coin fell again in to private hands, being acquired by another British family living in Jersey. This family put the groat up for auction at Stacks of New York in 1971, where our consignor’s grandfather bought the coin.
