Description
Uniformed bust left, SIR HENRY TROLLOPE KNIGHT, rev. Lion on a wrecked man/o’war seeing off a French fleet retreating in the distance, IN THE GLATTON OF 54 GUNS ENGAGED AND BEAT OFF 6 FRENCH FRIGATES CARRYING TWO HUNDRED & SIX GUNS, in exergue in two lines HELVOETSLUYS. JULY 16 1796, 49mm/67.89gm. (BHM 414; Eimer 874). Good Extremely Fine, bronzed with attractive cabinet toning.
Footnote
Sir Henry Trollope encountered six French ships off the coast of South Holland on the 15th of July (not the 16th. as on the medal) and after heavy fire, his ship the Gatton beat them off and they retired in total confusion. However, his ship had sustained such damage – almost all the ship’s rigging was blown away with only the mizen mast left standing, that he was unable to give chase and capture any.
