Description
For the ‘Society for Promoting Arts and Commerce’ for which it won the ‘Best Medal’. Head of Britannia left, with trident, O FAIR BRITANNIA HAIL, rev. Victory on prow of galleon, GOREE TAKEN, (MI ii 691/415; Eimer; 661; Pingo 12). Good Extremely Fine, dark bronze toning but beautifully even and glossy.
Footnote
The French island of Goree (just off the coast of Senegal) was captured in December 1758 by Admiral Augustus Keppel after little resistance, during the Seven Years' War. It was returned to France following the Treaty of Paris in 1763.
