Excessively rare Arab-Sasanian Drachm – unique variant
The silver Drachms of ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Muhammad are notable for their varied legends in different writing systems and languages. Like the coins of al-Hajjaj b. Yusuf his name is found in both Kufic and Pahlavi such as on this coin. On the obverse, the name ‘Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad in the field and bismallah in the margin, both in Kufic. On reverse, date and mint name are featured in Pahlavi, while in the margin the name of Mansur is written in Kufic, which is unique to this coin.
This particular combination of legends with the additional inscription in the reverse margin is thus far the only example known to have come to the market. In the past, Baldwin’s has sold one similar example in Islamic Coins Auction 8, May 2004, lot 32. It was the Malek type 356, however, without the additional inscription on the reverse which makes this a unique variation. This type overall was unrecorded until our 2004 auction and the subsequent publication in the reference book by Hodge Malek in 2019. This particular variant, however, is still unrecorded in literature.
