Description
Australia, Victoria (1839-1901), gold Half Sovereign, 1855, Sydney mint, 4.40g (KM 1; Marsh 380). About Extremely Fine, cleaned and mounted, light hairlines to surfaces. Extremely rare.
A great rarity of Australian and overall Victorian numismatic series. The 1855 Sydney Half Sovereign is one of the most challenging dates in the Australian series and one of the rarest Victorian Half Sovereigns to be acquired overall. High grade examples of this coin are virtually non-existent and this coin rarely appears on the market in such a good condition with clear detailing visible on the portrait and minimal damage to surfaces. The reported mintage of these pieces is 21,000 with an estimation that only 50-60 pieces survive today, with many of surviving examples being preserved in very low grades. Many adept collectors wait for years for the opportunity to acquire this piece which is missing from many advanced collections. This is only the third example of this rare coin that we have handled in Baldwin’s history.
